James Francis Pantridge was born on the outskirts of the historic village of Hillsborough, northern Ireland, in 1916. He qualified at Queen's University, Belfast, in 1939, and on the declaration of the second world war he immediately reported to the recruiting office, there being no conscription in Northern Ireland. Posted to the Far East he became medical officer of an infantry battalion. During the battle that preceded the fall of Singapore, he was given an immediate award of the Military Cross. The citation read, “This officer worked unceasingly under the most adverse conditions of continuous bombing and shelling and was an inspiring example to all with whom he came in contact. He was absolutely cool under the heaviest fire and completely regardless of his own personal safety at all times.”

This declaration was made shortly after Macron had announced his own candidacy. The alluvial graph clearly shows that Hollande’s announcement revitalized the Macron community, at the expense of Valls. Whereas the size of the Macron community had remained stable at the time when he announced his candidacy (427 accounts the previous week, 561 the week of the announcement, 472 the following week), it jumped to 749 accounts during the week when Hollande renounced standing for a second term, and then to 1479 accounts the following week. From that time onwards, this community continued to grow regularly until the elections. This change coincides with a slowdown in the Valls-Hollande community, the right-wing section of the Parti Socialiste that was ideologically closest to Macron. However, the Hamon community, which is further to the left, remained relatively stable during this period. Only 9 (30%) stated they have an explicit policy to deal with editors' financial conflicts of interest; lists elements that occur in most of these policies. (Only BMJ publicly declares individuals' conflicts of interest on its Web site.) Journals with higher impact factors were more likely to have a policy on editors' financial conflicts of interest than journals with lower impact factors. Seven respondents (23%) stated that they declare the nonfinancial conflicts of interest of their editors, 4 (13%) declare such conflicts for their editorial board members and 4 (13%) for other editorial advisers. However, there are few mechanisms in place to ensure that all declarations are updated, even where there is a policy of declaring these interests. It is often not made clear to readers exactly how some of these policies are implemented and how financial conflicts of interest are defined.
